Morris County Seniors enjoy final hoops
hurrah

By Dennis Wilson (Sports In The Garden
State)
|
| Coached by Whippany Park's Tom Wilson and Boonton's Cathy Foley, the team
of Colonial Hills Conference and Iron Hills Conference/Iron Division standouts rolled to a 74-52 victory over the
combined squad of Northern Hills Conference and Iron Hills Conference/Hills Division student/athletes coached by
Pequannock's Peggy Bionde and Mendham's Nate Ward in the 8th Annual Morris County Girls Basketball Association
Senior Girls All-Star Game contested Sunday afternoon in Mountain Lakes. |
| It was matchup of senior peers that produced an exciting contest that is
not totally represented by the final score. Produced by sportsinthegardenstate.com, the event may be viewed in
its entirety via this newspaper's web site. |
| Wearing their away uniforms for the last time, the winners were topped in
the scoring column by Randolph's Kathleen Nadaff and Lindsay Sullivan of West Morris, both of whom tickled the
twine with 10 points apiece. Naddaff is a durable athlete who started every game over the last four years for the
Rams, recording 64 double-double efforts. A two-time IHC - Iron as well as Morris County All-Star selection, Naddaff
will continue her career playing for Muhlenberg College of the NCAA Division III Centennial Conference in Allentown,
PA. Sullivan, who will also cross the Delaware River to matriculate at Lafayette College in Easton, PA where she
will play lacrosse, was a co-captain of the Wolfpack. |
| Pumping eight points through the iron was Roxbury's Sarah Gage, a four-year
varsity starter for the Gaels who averaged 11 points and seven rebounds per game. Undecided, her efforts in this
game will be available for viewing by the college coaching corps. |
| Morris Catholic's trio of Jenny Fitzgerald and the Schuckers twins produced
a combined 17 points. All three are currently undecided in their college selection process while post-game interviews
with Casey and Kathleen Schuckers are part of the web cast presentation. |
| Morris Knolls was represented by the Abrahamsens, Brynn and Melissa, who
are not twins, nor even sisters, but cousins. Brynn averaged 11.0 points and 5.1 rebounds per game and is currently
undecided as to which college she will attend to major in Secondary Educations. Melissa, a three-year swing guard/forward,
was only the second Knolls player to ever record a triple-double and is also undecided as to her future academic
venue. |
| Nadaff's teammate Shannon Fiscus, a two-year starter for the Rams, bombed
a trey through the cords but is also undecided as to her future college while Whippany Park's Jill Thomas, a four-year
starter for the Wildcats is also undecided. Representing the host Lakers was Gabi Lonbardi, their captain and a
two-year starter who will head to the Sunshine State to play lacrosse for Rollins while West Morris co-captain,
Eleni Kozas, a three-year starter, will head south to continue her education at Delaware, Louisville or Salisbury
in Maryland. |
| Boonton was represented by its tri-captains, Carly Foesel, a three-year
starter who will go to an NCAA Division III institution, either Arcadia of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference
or the College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, Renee Norton, a four-year letterwinner on the hardwood who
is headed to Muhlenberg where she will play field hockey and Jen Vasta, also a four-year monogram who is headed
to Hackettstown to continue her academic/athletic career at Centenary College. |
| For the vanquished NHC-IHC/Hills' squad, Morris Hills' Casey Sherwood ripped
the cords with a game-high 13 points and is headed to SUNY - Oswego where she will major in Zoology. She was on
the floor with two of her Scarlet Knight teammates, Jessie Bartoli who is deciding between Montclair State and
William Paterson, both of the New Jersey Athletic Conference, and Andrea Schmidt who has been accepted at the University
of North Carolina. |
| Mendham's trio of Amy Curtis, the Minutewomen's leading scorer who will
attend Wilkes to major in Communications, Sassy Weinstein, a hustling four-year starter who is undecided and Katelyn
Wiese, also a four-year starter who has been accepted at Wake Forest, also were teamed up for the last time. |
| Hanover Park, which finished 25-3, winning the IHC-Hills Division and NJSIAA
North Jersey Group II sectional title, had its two senior co-captains on the hardwood. Allison Campbell, a point
guard, is deciding between the Delaware, Fairfield and Scranton while Lindsey Singer, a four-year varsity starter
who finished her career with 793 points, 625 rebounds, 223 assists and 228 steals, will pick between Hofstra, Ithaca
and Montclair State. |
| Parsippany's captain Lindsey Loboda, a four-year starter in the paint, bombed
a three-pointer through the twine from the corner and will continue her basketball career at Rowan. Shannon Steuer,
a four-year varsity player for Parsippany Hills who finished with seven points, is undecided as to her college
choice but knows she wants to major in either Accounting or Early Childhood Education. Pequannock was represented
byco-captain's Lisa Martin and Gina Rowland, Martin a three-year varsity player, wants to study Nutrition but is
undecided while Rowland is headed to East Stroudsburg to pursue a career in Physical Education. Villa Walsh's Erin
Smith, a swing guard/forward is undecided while her teammate Kelly Bracken, a point guard, was selected but unavailable
for the game. |
| The players competed for fun and happy memories but it was a team-effort
by the members of the Morris County Girls Basketball Association that made it possible. In addition to the four
coaches, Joe Gabi of Chatham and Doug Wear of Hanover Park "worked" the scoring table and handled the
PA system while Morris Hills' Bill Nieman and Mountain Lakes' volunteer coach Richard Watt managed the box office
requirements. Most important, the event would not have been the success it was without the overall direction of
Mike Killingsworth, Mountain Lakes' outstanding Athletic Director. |
